BOOK REVIEW: THE ACTORS EYE, SEEING AND BEING SEEN By David Downs.

Like every week we post a book review on a subject related to acting, health, personal growth or anything related to the showbiz industry. This time its David Downs “The Actors Eye”.

The book makes a clear statement in the fact that an actors training should be a perfect balance and mixture of the students life experiences and its connection with theatrical hands-on experience. So Downs uses play texts, and characters…etc. Which I completely agree on.

He uses exerpts from Hamlet, The Sea Gull, Romeo and Juliet, Antigone, or the Cherry Orchard. And also mixes plenty of active improvisational work with every exercise in the book.

The author then talks about the limitations of the new “true to self” modern day acting premise technique. And gets into Imagination, Concentration, Characterization and sensorial work.

Overall the book is a bit repetitive but it certainly gets its points across. So, Is it worth reading? Yes. It’s a great book that makes you look at classics and traditional acting beliefs and question them. So more as a challenging book than a training book I would recommend it.
