ETTIQUETTE AT A MOVIE PREMIERE

<br />

OMG!OMG!OMG! You have just been invited to your first movie premiere through connections or even better: you star in the movie!!!!!But, what do you do? How do you know if you are behaving well/ What do you wear? Should you stop for photographers or will that seem cocky? Should you invite your friend since the invite says 2 people? How do you know where to go?

First things first. Don’t forget the thankyou note to whomever invited you if you are not part of the cast. You also need to confirm your assistance and that of your partner (I am more inclined to going alone unless married or if you must be accompanied then bring someone in the business as well. Its not always fun for someone to stand and watch as you mingle..). Secondly, find out all you can about the film, actors, production, and style the premiere is going for. It will all be invaluable information if the press decides to ask you questions of why you have come (and yes, press will most likely like to find out why. More on that later.). That will also give you big clues on your next dilemma: what to wear.

<br />

Unless the invitation clearly states a dress-code, or what not to wear (some stars forbid others from wearing similar colors at a premiere so not to clash and get more spotlight so don’t be surprised) then you need to think about what type of premiere it is (that’s where the research helps). Is it a giant Hollywood action-packed blockbuster? Is it a kids film? Is it an indie? Is there a theme to the premiere and/or movie you should follow? Bear in mind that you don’t want to wear an outfit like Matrix-style to a cartoon movie, or jeans and flip flops to a serious Hollywood premiere. For kids films where color packed casual clothes, for indie films you can go casual but don’t be lazy and still put thought into how you look, don’t look like you didn’t care. For big blockbusters black-tie is fairly common.  But what about the inbetweens?? Where in doubt, just stick to something conservative and classic:

<br />

Men: Brown or black classic dress shoes to match with a belt (and shirt tucked in please!), pants (not jeans), a plain or pinstriped shirt in a light  color, and a sports jacket if it is cold. Don’t go for black on black unless you know you wont be mistaken for caterers or organizers.

Women: A medium length dress (right above or right under the knee is most flattering) not too extravagant in print, pattern or shape, but still detailed to show your own style, and pretty high heels with a clutch. If it is cold take a Rebecca with you to cover your shoulders. Or even try wearing a classic pant suit (don’t go for classic black as a lot of staff and organizers will be wearing that).

Once there, find the person in charge of the event; Usually the one screaming and running around like crazy at the entrance. Hand them your invitation and They will give you instructions of where to go.  When you pass by the photographers pose for just a moment unless told otherwise, and stop for press if they call your name to support the movie and/or cast. After that go inside, take a seat and PLEASE wait until after the movie is finished to mingle and try to make any connections in the after-party. If you do this, and always try to stay polite to staff at the event as well as to the “stars” you might even become a regular at premieres! Just remember not to confuse the name of the movie when walking the red carpet (Oops! Yes, Im guilty!VERY embarrassing!)

Tell me, have you ever had an embarrassing moment at a premiere? Let us know with your comments…
