Like every week we post a book review on a subject related to acting, health, personal growth or anything related to the showbiz industry. This time its Uta Hagen’s acclaimed and long awaited book “Respect for Acting”.
In this book Uta Hagen discusses all the techniques and standards of good acting and gives practical information based on problems actors face in theater. These experiences are an account of her own struggles with different techniques as a teacher.
The book is split into 3 parts:
“The Actor” is about the techniques that set you as an actor in motion physically, verbally and emotionally. Talks about the concept of yourself as an actor and acting.
“The object exercises” offers specific and detailed exercises for the actor.
“The play and the role” defines a play and character and talks about the actor who has to undertake such role. Also talks abou style, rehersal…
Is it worth reading? YES. Overall it’s a good book to expand your knowledge on another technique and Uta Hagen has clear ways of explaining her ideas. Even if you are not an inter-disciplinary actor its still worth knowing what works for other actors.
