Homage to the great sci-fi effects aritsts…
I admit it. I went to see Transformers this week. No, Im not proud. The case is, the movie has some wonderful effects (sometimes too many in too short a time frame, but you have to give it to them.. theyre well made). But does that make it a good movie? Heres what I think. The same way a good costume doesnt make a good actor, good effects dont make a good movie. According to an article in THR the movie was expected to do well in Box office and bad in reviews, but nobody thought it would do SO good at the box-office and SO bad in reviews. So you can have great bombs and seamless special effects, but when the story, the acting and basic rythym of the movie is so terrible…even the fans reject it.
“What the heck did she say?”
Leaving a decent phone message seems like it would be a no-brainer, right? Unfortunately, not always. All too often Mr. Mumbles, Ms. Fast-Talker, and Mrs. Nocontactinfo leave messages. Yet the difference between a good message and a bad one might mean landing that next role or not. Casting directors and [...]
We all know the feeling; whether an actor, writer, director, painter or any other proffessional artist… we’ve all had to finish a job in time for shooting or handing it over to the client… and have felt stuck! The worse timing, the worse feeling, you try and be creative, try and get those talent juices flowing and…NOTHING.
In this day and age you have to stay connected. There is no way I could stress this enough. As an actor you have to be available for: Agents, CDs, fellow actors, Possible contacts, Directors… And I dont mean just by having a simple phone with you. Now-a-days you have to be reachable by email as well. If a Casting director is going through his list of possible actors to call in for an audition and he cant reach you he will immediately go to the next name on his list.
Most of us write emails everyday. Agents, CDs, Producers, directors, teachers, fellow actors… So, why don’t we put the same care into our emails as our other communications? The way you present yourself on writing also says alot about you so dont just jot down the first things that come to mind. Below I share some guidelines on writing an excellent email. Before I go further, I want to say that these tips are assuming that you are sitting in front of your computer typing a business email. Emails from mobile devices are a different story for a different post…

We have all been there. You use google to search for someone you just met, to verify something a date told you, to find info on your favorite actor. But what happens when you do? You normally get both sides of the story. The good and the bad harsh critics. So if you are thinking of searching for yourself…be ready.
To all you actors who who dont have cable BUT STILL NEED TO WATCH TV, PILOTS…etc..

O.K. We all know how actors can be: egocentric, narcicistic and vain. And there are plenty of times when that would be anything but useful. Except one: The demo-reel.
Demo reels have one purpose and one purpose only: Showing you (I know you love it!). And that means it is of no importance who feeds you the line, their response, their shot, only you, you, you. Here is how a proper reel should look:
Koroko Dreams and Osaka University have built a bizarre android-like robotic actress that can speak, blink, and is even capable of several different human-like facial expressions (which is a few more than some “real” actors and actresses..you know who I mean). They’re revealed the Actroid off at the International Robot Exhibition at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center.
So I admit to being an absoloute “apple” fan and evangelist without a hint of shame for two reasons: it has overwhelmingly outperformed any of my PC experience, AND it is soooooo intuitive. Thats something I enjoy when I install a new prgram and dont really want to go through all the menus and tabs to learn how it works. Mac applications have a way of simplifying any users learning curve. Plus incase you havent noticed: Macs are the computers of the artists. And thats what you are my friend. Or will be soon hopefully. A working actor/artist…
Its amazing what technology can do now-a-days and how the studios and film-makers are using it leaves us in awe. Every year some new form of CGI or motion-sensors showed up. But now we are going to witness a whole new level. 3-D animation movies with people-like characters will no longer take years to make…and who knows what more developments this will lead to!
All of us have bills to pay, obviously. And we also have countless expenses: classes, headshots, assistants, printing…etc. And con artists know this. So they come up with get-rich-fast “jobs” that are alluring. Generally these offers take on forms such as: packaging envelopes form home, making jewelry, investing in stocks packages, fabricating candles, assembling together some form of hand crafted what-not…and as you do you will be making thousands! Tens of thousands!! Or so they say…
The importance of owning the domain:

May seem very silly to you now, but give this some thought. IMAGINE: You’ve actually made it big, you are known in the industry and with the general public. You have fans and millions of people are using google to look for info on you. The first thing that comes up?
As actors we know how important it is to be connected at all times because your business (so also your money) depends on being able to jump at an opportunity when it presents itself. That might mean something as simple as being on time to an impromptu meeting with a producer in an hour (but how do you find your way there on time?) or sending your resume and head-shot to a casting director while you are at the gym, or even simply answering the phone. Not to worry though, the rate at which technology is evolving
