HOW TO…GET OVER YOURSELF?

Some of the most common request agents, casting directors and managers have of prospect clients and new actors, is for them to lose the arrogance or cockyness and be more professional. Whle we understand that its a type of defense-mechanism for the many insecurities that plague us, it is important to not be perceived as onything other than a serious actor…

YOU DO CARE ABOUT WHAT OTHERS THINK…
Have you ever said, “I don’t care what anyone thinks about me.”?
I know I have, and I also know it’s a lie.

The truth is we do care what other people think about us. Why wouldn’t we? How others view us can make or break us in this industry. It’s how we get jobs, score auditions, get agents, make friends, and create enemies.

DEALING WITH THOSE DREADED AUDITIONS…
How do you stand out?

This is the biggest thing in auditioning as far as I’m concerned. It’s sometimes hard to fathom just how many people the casting folk have to see on a daily basis. The same is true for the university admissions folk as well. There are literally hundreds of thousands of people that want to be actors and as a general rule,

ARE YOU TOO SENSITIVE?..

HighlySensitive.org has a good article relating “Hipervigilance and High sensitivity” to creative talent. Is it an asset to be highly in tone with your emotions as an actor or is it a hinderance. We’ve all heard the: “you need THICK-SKIN to make it in this business, kid.” Is it true?

Failure and personal growth development…

Here is a great article for all us actors… in our job we face rejection almost daily, and it so easy to let it affect us…

REPRESSED CREATIVITY…

Productivity 501 has a good article this week worth checking out that talks about why as we get older we lose certain levels of our creativity due to our “social” behavior. To see the full article… Click Here.

BEFORE YOU STUDY ACTING, STUDY THE LIFESTYLE
In order to make an intelligent decision about acting as a way to spend your life, do the research. Its a shame they only write biographies on the successful actors, when in fact it would be much more instructive to talk about all those actors who never made a dime in the business. Because the public is only exposed to star actors’ lives, most people have the idea that that is the lifestyle of any actor…

HOLD YOUR HORSES! DEVELOPING PATIENCE

In modern times we are used to getting things done fast. Whether it be due to a lack of time or in other cases laziness, we like immediate results. But ACTING IS A MARATHON, not a fast sprint. So its imperative that as actors we develop a patience. You will spend alot of time waiting for a call, or an answer, or even success…

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE GOING INTO THE ACTING BUSINESS

Any business person planning to invest time, energy, and his life savings in a new business commits himself to relentless research. He interviews people in the field, checks the library and/or theinternet for information, and conducts a market survey to see if there is a need for his product.
In many ways, an actor is no different than any other business person. To enter the marketplace in an effective way, the actor needs to analyze his product by coming up with clear, concise answers to a series of essential questions that you need to ask yourself..

BOOK REVIEW: TRIPPING THE PROM QUEEN By Susan Shapiro Barash

Like every week we post a book review on a subject related to acting, health, personal growth or anything related to the showbiz industry. This time its dedicated to all those women (although men have been known to act up like this too) that wish you something –other-than-the-best. It’s “Trippin the Prom Queen” by Susan [...]

DO YOU FEEL THE NEED TO IMPRESS?

WHEN YOU LET YOUR PERSONAL LIFE AFFECT YOUR JOB
For some artists their job is their safe-haven. When they are in a bad personal situation they can immerse themselves into their craft and forget about it for hours, days… For actors that is practically impossible. The difference lies…

TAKING A VACATION FROM AN UNSTEADY JOB?

First of all let me get things straight: auditioning and managing your career IS a job. You have many responsibilities both on a daily level as a longer-term level, so if you don’t feel like you are working hard even without having a steady role, then you are doing something very wrong.

Calling your agent (or finding one if you don’t already have it), same with your manager or publicist, going on auditions, interviews, memorizing sides, studying in class and on your own, reading up on your career, updating your resume, going to callbacks, working out….

CHASING DREAMS OR CHASING MONEY?

Everyday we are faced with great decisions. But not every day our decisions have such a large impact as this one: should I chase a dream that has very few possibilities of generating large income but fulfills me personally, or should I invest my time in a career with steady and greater income and find time someplace else to dedicate to my passion.

If you are an actor you have already made that choice. If you are starting out or pondering whether to try acting you need to know one thing…

BE UNAPOLOGETIC AND EMANATE CONFIDENCE

One of the biggest mistakes that new actors make is being a little too cocky or even disrespectful thinking that it would project more confidence and casting directors or producers would look at them as if they were someone who stands his own. WRONG!

People can read through silly tactics that only make you look bad, immature and like someone they don’t want to work with. But worse than being cocky is being insecure and…

HELPING NEW ACTORS

A lot of people in the industry think of newcomers as competition. Let me take that back. A lot of ignorant people in the industry think of newcomers as competition. Why? Because they figure these new faces or all other actors have a chance at taking their job or earning money they somehow believe belongs to them. With all due respect: bullshit!

If there is anything I have learned in this business, is nobody steals your roles. You get the roles meant for you. Period. If they come fast and big; good for you! If it takes a little more hard work and…
